Technical Skills in Mushroom Cultivation
In the context of Income Generating Activities (IGA), improvement of food security and nutrition among beneficiaries, different initiatives are being introduced. Among others the production of mushroom has been found as a very interesting initiative since it requires less investment in terms of money, labour and land.
Mushrooms are rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Mushrooms have a short gestation period, they grow in a short time, just 7-10 days after planting, ready for harvesting and marketing.
Mushroom cultivation does not depend on climate conditions which is the main challenge in agriculture production. The mushroom production has various benefits since it is a decent source of income and mushrooms have a high nutrition value which can hardly be found in other food stuffs. This makes it the most important food in fighting against malnutrition especially in pregnant women and children below five years.
Mushrooms can be harvested 4-7 times during the production cycle of 3 months and can be produced all year round. Thus, mushroom production provides quick returns plus profit thus, helping in poverty alleviation. With the mushroom cultivation business, we train youth and women how to make mushroom tubes, cultivation techniques, and technicalities, harvesting, and marketing. We support them in the entire process.
- Cultivation Techniques: From mushroom tubes production (gukora imigina) to harvesting, we provide step-by-step guidance on mushroom farming. We link our participants with local, regional and international markets.
- Value Addition: Learning how to process mushrooms into high-value products, ensuring maximum profitability.
- Sustainability Practices: Emphasizing eco-friendly methods and resource management to ensure long-term success in mushroom cultivation.
Value Addition and Branding
Adding value to agricultural products significantly increase profitability. Our program includes:
- Product Development: Training on how to create marketable products from raw agricultural produce.

Access to finance is critical for scaling agricultural businesses. Faraja Rwanda partners with Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) to facilitate participants with:
- Connections with Financial Institutions: Helping participants secure loans, grants, and other funding opportunities where our female participants are given loans (up to 5 million) without collateral.
- Savings and Loan Associations: Promoting the formation of Voluntary Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to support financial inclusion, acquisition of soft loans and collective growth.
- Linkages with Business Development Fund: Through MFIs, we connect our participants with BDF for derisking and collateral surety.
Linkages to Markets

- Market Research and Analysis: Identifying and understanding market trends, demands, and opportunities.
- Networking Opportunities: Facilitating connections with buyers, distributors, and other key stakeholders in the agricultural value chain.
- Export Readiness: Preparing participants to meet the standards and requirements for entering international markets.
