Protecting Nature, Empowering Communities
Faraja Rwanda is committed to advancing climate action and biodiversity conservation by working hand in hand with communities, local government, and development partners. Our projects focus on safeguarding Rwanda's rich ecosystems, strengthening community resilience, and promoting sustainable livelihoods in the face of climate change.
Why It Matters
Rwanda is known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, blessed with extraordinary biodiversity from the iconic mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park to unique wetlands and forests that provide vital ecosystem services. However, these natural treasures face increasing threats from deforestation and unsustainable land use, climate change impacts such as landslides and soil erosion and pressure on ecosystems from population growth and farming practices.
Protecting biodiversity and building climate resilience is therefore essential not only for nature but also for the well-being of people who depend on it.
Our Focus Areas
Community-Led Conservation
We empower communities living near biodiversity hotspots to participate in sustainable natural resource management, reforestation, and eco-tourism initiatives.
Climate-Smart Agriculture
We support farmers to embrace climate-smart practices that improve productivity, enhance resilience, and protect the environment.
Renewable Energy
We promote the use of renewable energy solutions to reduce reliance on firewood and protect forests.
Environmental Education
We work with schools, youth groups, and local leaders to build awareness about biodiversity and climate change.
Climate-Smart Agriculture Interventions
- Agroforestry – integrating fruit and indigenous trees into farms to restore soil fertility and combat erosion.
- Soil and Water Conservation – promoting terracing, mulching, and rainwater harvesting to reduce degradation.
- Organic Farming – reducing dependence on chemical inputs while maintaining healthy soils.
- Mushroom Farming – introducing sustainable mushroom cultivation as a flagship innovation. This practice uses agricultural by-products such as coffee husks and banana leaves, requires very little land, and provides a fast, nutritious, and profitable food source.
Through these approaches, we help communities achieve better harvests, improved nutrition, and diversified incomes, while safeguarding Rwanda's ecosystems against the impacts of climate change.
Ongoing Projects
